Lot description:

Mantinea

The coinage in honor of Antinoos donated by Vetour

Estimate: CHF 1'250.00

Tetrassarion or Sestertius (AE, 26.05, 34 mm, 6), 134. - Nude three-quarter bust of Antinoos to right, seen from the front. Rev. Horse walking to right. Blum 4. BMC 89. Extremely rare. Brown patina. Fields somewhat smoothed on the obverse and heavily scratched on the reverse, edges hammered (perhaps so that the coin could fit into some sort of mount), otherwise, very fine.

Acquired from S. Boutin in February 1975. A note from BCD: this is the coin M. Boutin sold me at the ‘friendly’ price of FF 17,000 as a consolation when I told him that I lost the Peyrefitte one (see below, lot 1499 and note).
